In 2022, our son required a highly specialized surgical procedure. We were referred to a surgeon in Madison and were informed that this physician was the only provider in Wisconsin capable of performing the surgery. 

At the time, my wife worked for the healthcare system that referred us and carried our family's health insurance through that organization. Because the provider had access to our insurance information and was familiar with the network, we reasonably assumed that the referral process would account for coverage considerations. We had no reason to believe the surgeon was out of network, especially given that there was only one provider in the state able to perform the procedure.  They referred us to that surgeon,  and we listened.  

Later that year, we received a bill for approximately $7,000. The amount exceeded both our deductible and maximum out-of-pocket expectations, which immediately raised concerns. We contacted both our insurance company and the Madison provider to understand why we were being charged at out-of-network rates for a medically necessary procedure performed by the only available specialist in the state.

Unfortunately, despite our efforts, we found ourselves repeatedly navigating the same conversations without making meaningful progress.
